Beyond the Restaurant: Subway’s Fresh Start Scholarship Program

How the Subway Cares Foundation® helps hundreds of Sandwich Artists® pursue education and opportunity

April 30, 2026

Behind every Subway® sandwich is a Sandwich Artist, often balancing multiple responsibilities and ambitions for their future. The Fresh Start Scholarship Program, funded by the Subway Cares Foundation, was built to make those goals possible.

The program provides tuition assistance to eligible Sandwich Artists pursuing higher education or vocational training while working in Subway restaurants. Since expanding the program in 2024, the Foundation has awarded more than $1 million in tuition assistance to hundreds of restaurant employees globally.

Receiving [the Subway Cares] scholarship has been such a blessing,” said scholarship recipient and Sandwich Artist Timothy St. Angelo of Southeastern Louisiana University. “Without it, I don’t know what I would have done.”

For many recipients, the impact goes beyond tuition and makes pursuing an education and professional goals a real possibility.

“Sandwich Artists power our restaurants every single day,” said Jeanette Sten of the Subway Cares Foundation. “They bring passion, dedication and heart to the work they do, and it’s incredibly meaningful for us to be able to support them in return. The Fresh Start Scholarship Program is one way we can invest in their dreams and recognize the impact they make in our restaurants and communities.”

The Fresh Start Scholarship program is one part of the broader work of the Subway Cares Foundation, an independent nonprofit that invests in education, provides assistance to franchisees and their teams, and helps support hunger relief in communities where Subway restaurants operate.
