Clocking In at 85: How a Crest Hill Regular Became Part of the Subway Family

Some guests stop in for a meal. Others become part of the Subway story.

At 4 p.m. sharp, seven days a week, Jim, a retired truck driver and proud veteran, walks into the Subway restaurant in Crest Hill, Illinois, with a smile, a story and a joke the team knows well.

Over time, Jim has become more than a regular, he’s become part of the team.

So, when it came time to celebrate his 85th birthday, Jim knew exactly where he wanted to be: his local Subway.

For the Subway team, there was no hesitation in making sure his day was special. They decorated Jim’s favorite table, snapped photos together and surprised him with gifts, including a gift card for future visits. The celebration reflected the warmth that has defined Jim’s relationship with the restaurant over the years.

“He comes in and says he’s ready to clock in for his shift,” a team member shared. “And when he heads out, he always jokes that he’s clocking out.”

It’s a simple ritual, but it speaks to the bond Jim has built with the team. What started as a daily visit became something deeper, built on consistency, familiarity and genuine care on both sides of the counter.
