Now in its 8th year, every cookie purchased at Subway Canada from June 15th–21st helps provide fresh, nutritious food to children in need.
TORONTO, ON (June 10, 2026) – On Monday, June 15th, Subway Canada begins its eighth annual Never Miss Lunch Week, a national initiative supporting children facing food insecurity during the summer months, when school meal programs pause.
From June 15th–21st, people in Canada can take a simple but impactful action: purchase any Subway cookie to help provide 220K fresh, nutritious food packs to children in 235 communities across the country.
In partnership with Food Banks Canada’s After the Bell program, the initiative addresses a critical reality: for many children, summer break also means the loss of a consistent daily meal. While children make up just 20% of Canada’s population, they represent one in three food bank clients—highlighting a growing need for access to nutritious food throughout the summer.
“At Subway Canada, we believe no child should go without the nourishment they need, especially when school is out,” said Courtney Hindroff, Managing Director of Subway Canada. “For eight years, Never Miss Lunch has turned an everyday purchase into real impact, helping provide fresh, nutritious food so kids can stay energized through the summer and return to school ready to thrive.”
To further explore the issue, Subway Canada conducted a national survey which revealed that 67% of educators across Canada believe food insecurity is a major concern during the summer months.
The findings also revealed:
- Hunger is directly affecting learning in the classroom: 95% say hunger has a moderate or major impact on student behaviour and performance
- Educators are seeing hunger-linked behaviour firsthand: 87% have witnessed behaviour changes they believe are linked to hunger
- Summer hunger can impact September learning: Nearly all educators (95%) believe hunger affects students’ readiness to learn when they return to school in the fall
Together, these insights reinforce that hunger is not only a social issue, but a learning issue that affects children’s ability to focus, grow and succeed.
“Over the past eight years, Subway Canada’s support through Never Miss Lunch has made a meaningful difference for children across the country. We are deeply grateful for their ongoing commitment to ensuring kids have access to fresh, nutritious food when school programs pause for the summer,” shared Kirstin Beardsley, CEO Food Banks Canada. “At a time when food banks serve more than 700,000 children each month, partnerships like this are more important than ever. Together, we’re helping ensure kids can focus on being kids and not on where their next meal will come from.”
Since 2019, the program has delivered more than one million food packs with fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy to children nationwide to help them stay fueled during the summer.

About the Survey:
The research was conducted online in Canada by The Harris Poll on behalf of Veritas among 155 grade school professionals, defined as those who work with children ages 4-17 in a paid or volunteer position such as teachers, administrators, after-school providers, tutors, youth program leaders, and coaches within the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The survey was conducted May 13-15, 2026. Raw data were not weighted and are therefore only representative of the individuals who completed the survey.
